Place: The Met, NYC

Date: 10.20..07 - Time: 10:35 am

Event: responding to shark

On my usual Sunday walk through the Met, I
unfortunately encountered a Shark, Damien Herst's creation. The currator wisely placed historical works respresenting the beast and its terror across the gallery from it. The question is who is the beast in this case and is this worthy of Musuem placement.

It is not Damien Herst.

Time will Tell.

Place: Sitting by my studio door

Date: 10.03..07 - Time: 01:35 pm

Event: Talking about grids

For some time now I have been creating .... Dypitchs, Tripitichs

and so on. I have been working paralell structures that push and

pull with my gestures/strokes. The grids I have opened the opportunity

to expand upon that in multiples, and find out more about why

and how. I need the structure of multiples against multiples.

My favorite quote from the 60's is "Coney Island of the Mind"

The painter Reginald Marsh in the 50's whose landscapes of

of Coney Island projected the joy of the beach and the

carnival. Laurence Ferlengitti's poem that including the phrase

"Coney Island of the Mind" was about the fantasies and travels

our mind rewards us. This moment feels rewarding...

So where do I find myself?

Searching for more to see... More to think about...

wet on my studio floor - 07.29.07 - Time 11:35 am

Yesterday I had the pleasure of a studio visit to my good
friend Danny. As always a very enlightening experience,

Our discusion focused on our concerns of the surface entry
to our works.

Today, as I wait for the work on my studio floor to set. I am
playing back what Danny and I spoke about.

wet on my studio floor - 07.29.07 - Time 01:00 pm

We both focused on the process of watching our
work going through many lives as it sets.

At the same time I believe we both realized that
these moments are some of our most cherished
moments while painting.

Place: Metropolitan Museum of Art

Date: 05.26.07 - Time:2:45 pm

Event: Meeting a day-trader while

being inspired by Stella - part one

For days now I have been listening to my educated friends
express their dismay about Frank Stella's current work.

Needless to say I haven't found one person to agree with.

These works present a challenge to most of us. Painting
to Architecture.. Yes, one paints, they sculpt. that makes
sense.

All architecture is sculptural whether you think the
esthetics are the same or not.

Frank Stella understands this. What is so inspiring about
these works have the touch of Stella's canvas just a little
roughness around the edges with great order .

Back to the day-trader what does he have to do with Stella?

This nice young man walked up to us to share his experience
of delight in seeing these works . Interrupting our heavy
discussion.

We asked him, what did he like so much about the work,

pointing to one in the center of the gallery,

"The wonderful flowing form and the contrast of the
textures against it."

Stella's touch.

Agreeing totally with him, I instructed him to go to
see the current work of Stella's at Paul Kasmin's
gallery on 27th and 10th Avenue.

As he parted, I played back his comments .
This day trader is a real lover of art with an
unprejudiced eye.

That's the answer..

Place: WALKING STREETS OF NYC

Date: 05.09.07 - Time:2:45 pm

Event: MOMA PART II - TREO MESSAGE

I love story telling

Place: MOMA

Date: 05.09.07 - Time:2:45 pm

Event: Meerting an onlooker

Feeling the eyes of an onlooker, I truned to find
and kind elderly gentlemen watching my every move.

Through my lense I had been making studies of the
weathered surface of a Richard Serra. ThIs goliath was
sitting center stage in the Moma Garden.

My new acquantice had been studing thia for some time,
totally dismissing the lush landscape set on the surface
of the work.

As I walked away, he proceeded to take my place
and bringi his lense as close to the landscape
as possible .

Place: Christies

Date: 05.13.07 - Time:12:45 pm

Event: Mingiling with the market makers.

Sunday, 1:00pm walking the floors of Christies, ocasionally engaging a

fellow viewer to share the joy of viewing fine works.

This preview remided me of the days when I would sit with Warhol,

Halston and Capote on the black couch in the front of Studio 54.

The difference is there was no market making at STUDIO 54.

I wonder what Andy would say to what the Market Makers are making.

Marks II - sumi, acrylic on wood panel - private collection

Place: Madison Avenue

Date: 05.12.07 - Time:10:00 am

Event: Being present

As I do every Saturday morning I take a brief walk around the galleries of Madison Avenue. Always feeling energized by some work in the window of a Gallery I move on to paint.

Today the sky was glorious, a sharp blue with soft cloud. Just taking a moment to soak this in. A jet streaked across, its trail marking the sky with a moving gesture .

So ... back to the studio I went.

Place: staring into the mouth of the beast..

Date: 05.12.07 - Time: 07:00 pm

Event: Standing with the masses

So many times I stand looking into the the mouth of the beast, awaiting approval of my creations. . .

Now I stand with the masses, not starxing into the mouth of beast.

Last night for the second time this week I stood in galleries watching my peers await approval of their most recent creations.

It all comes down to this moment.. or is it the moment when the work is completed but not dry and the rest is left to destiny?

re-awakening 1 09_15_03 - 50" x 80 "- Acrylic on Canvas

Place: Bus Stop

Date: 05.11.07 - Time: 03:00 pm

Event: meeting an art lover

Every day I like to meet one new person....

Today I was carrying a canvas uptown by bus. Never
covering my paintings, hoping to open a causal conversation
with an onlooker. Well, this enthusiastic elegant elderly woman
started up a conversation. From 37th to 61st she spoke and I
listened. Her conversation was weaving in and out of pastels to
dance to pastels to young women who wore short
skirts and stiletto heels.

As she said of the black and white canvas that attracted her to
talk to me... it has so much color in it.

...when it is a art lover it is even better.

Place: early morning coffee

Date: 04.10.07 - Time: 10:00 am

Event: Talking about postcards and painting

Can you imagine being a painter and all

you work from is postcards and snap shots

that good friends and family have sent you.

That is some window to the world...

Place: Wondering NYC Streets

Date: 03.19.07 - Time: 4:00 pm

Event: Late day viewing

Reminding me of the day I walked out of
the Metroploitian Musuem of Art after viewing
the Sean Scully show. The streets of New
York were glowing with textures
and colors again.

The Scully show had so sensitised my
way of seeing that now I had a new
way of viewing the world.

Place: Curb for the ARTs

Date: 03.10.07 - Time: 1:00 am

Event: The Opening

Place: Howard Jacobson Gallery

Date: 02.16.07 - Time: 1:49 pm

Event: Looking at splats and drips.

Met with a nice welcome and the feeling that I could spend
sometime absorbing the rich material adorning their walls,

I settled in and really took a look. A large Poons',a small
Frakenthaler and a Blum caught my attention all at once.

To view these works you had stand in the entrance way
between the two gallerys. Standing there for some
ten minutes they asked "may I help you" .

MY ANSWER WAS JUST FACINATED BY THE SPLATS
AND DRIPS.

When leaving the gallery I realized what a joy to be able
to see past the splats and the drips.

Place: In my head

Date: 01.26.07 Time: 6:49 pm

Event: Looking inside and out

There are days that we take the time to look inside and out . To explore

those alpha moments. The past few monents(paintings) have been a

clearing of my thoughts. Though I am still asking what it means

to look inside and out.

Place: Madison & 79th street

Date: 01.26.07 Time: 6:49 pm

Event: Settled In

With only five days left in the first month of 2007 I have settled in to focus on my 3 solo exhibitions later this year, two in New York City and one in California. For my show in Laguna Beach I am creating a refined extension of my series of black works with white marks and gestures. For the NY exhibitions I am developing a series derived from pre-historic cave drawings and paintings, replete with vibrantly colored gestures and marks. Looking down from 79th St. at Madison Ave.,
|
imagining perhaps an exhibition here as well...

--------------------

Place: Pace/MacGill Gallery

Date: 01.11.07 Time: 7:43 pm

Event: recollections of youthful impressions

a wonderful re-union .

As a artist that works with a bush and canvas, you would think my
inspirations would be Picasso, Pollack or Twombly. Irving Penn is my favorite artist. His work makes me look for and see many special visual stories that make up my paintings - the idea that the age of textures, the color of reflections and the elegance of shapes can tell a whole story. Last week revisited my visual foundation in the guide of Irving Penn's current exhibition at Pace/Mcgill.

What a wondreful re-union

Homage to Mr. Penn
