In the days to come this page will be filled

with my recollections from childhood to

today, of people and events that shaped

my way of seeing.

Place: My Chair
Date: 12.30.08 - Time: 09:03:36 am
Event: Looking at Movies

Time has been good to me... four years ago I took the initiative to focus and

find a path that would strenghten my reason for being. One rarely has records of this

focus and growth. I have found that the world has been good to me and recorded

in these seven films a history, one I am proud of . Now moving forward, what will be

there ...? my work and more films for sure.

Event:
thinking about my primary shapes, & relationships.

Where did I find my first primary shapes?

As a photojournalist during demonstrations in the late 60's -

early 70's there were many times that I found shelter lying on

the ground, fending off the assaults of the police. The motor drive just

ran, the un-focused camera capturing the shapes of both the police and

the demonstrators...

that have inspired
.

We all must admit to ourselves, in our moments of

strength, that there are those who influence us everyday, that

our interaction with them or there work gives us insight and strength.

This morning I decided to tell the world that in studying the details of

Sol Lewitt's work I found inspiration, and thanked him by my naming my

new work Homage II with his lessons in mind. I have also thanked three

other artists who influenced my vision they are represented in the works,

Homage to Mr. Penn, Homage to Picasso and Ode to Pollack. We must

not forget that without the past story tellers and image makers there is

no making the future for others to be inspired by. It is all about inspiration...

some of us forget that.

Date: 07.22.08 - Time: 8:56:20 am
Event: Looking at Turner

One can find such peace in a rainy day.

Place: 3rd Avenue Bus
Date: 07.05.08 - Time: 10:23 pm
Event: Thinking of Ferlinghetti

It was 1969 when my best friend gave me a copy of

"Coney Island of the Mind" by Ferlinghetti for graduation.

This title, the phrase, this idea has stuck to me throughout

my life. Speaking to the imagination, with the freedom to allow

oneself to view, absorb and grow. To feel free to receive

what is new and different without peer pressure,

to open up ...

As I face a white space, as

I begin to act out my idea,

for a moment

questioning

where to start,

this phrase passes

through my mind...

A Road Work
(currently can be viewed at

Adam Baumgold Gallery
Until August 15, 08)

Place: Walking on Park Avenue
Date: 07.03.08 - Time: 01:29 pm
Event: Walking and thinking of what to say.

Thoughts have been bouncing around, what am I actually creating?

What has this work of the past year brought me? The past year this has

brought me the attention of those who like to think, who understand

the idea of looking for the edge...

How has my life experience changed over this past year of working only in

black and white?

This is all about communicating a different way for me , eliminating color, the

filtering of distractions and maximizing the surface
so as to look closer at

what I have always taken for granted. What lies in the shadows.

Now taking the sensibilities of structure and turning them inside out.

The gesture that is always free and spontaneous has become the backbone
of my work acting like a hard grid, playing with symmetrical forms that I pour,
drip or spatter - my surface the "grids" now add that spontaneity always found
in the freedom of action painting.

Place: the deck
Date: 06.12..08 - Time: 12:29 pm
Event: recollections of irving Penn acting out

Mr. Penn had cylindrical objects on a round low table, walking in
circles around the surface, he gentle knocked the table with
his knee, sat down replaced two of the objects that had
fallen
and again started acting out around the table.

This was the first act I saw Mr. Penn do on the White Surface.

Place: Park Avenue Armory
Date: 05.08.08 - Time: 07:26 pm
Event: Rembering a good friend

Walking through the Fidlay Jr. Booth, a friendly gentlemen introduced

himself as David Findlay. I wondered if this would be the Mr. Findlay whose

gallery was so important to me as a child walking 57th st. He walked away

after introducing himself, still curious I approaced him. Asking him if he

knew a gentlmen by the name of Dick Widel. He looked at me, paused

and with a very sincere smile said "yes, he was such a wonderful man".

I proceeded to tell him my favorite story of being a young artist and

Dick Widel. At an age of 14yrs with canvas under my arm, I was always

more then welcomed in his gallery. This fine gentlemen introduced me to the

gallery world, as open and generiuos... For years I have looked for someone

to discuss this wonderful exerience, and feel the same compasion about

Dick Widel...

Date: 04.13.08 - Time: 04:12:49 pm

Event: Feeding time for Sam

Sam, we all know Cats named Sam.

Sam comes to feed always at 4:00pm. Well Sam really isn't Sam the cat, but

the pigeon who started to visit me some time ago on my deck/outdoor painting

studio. Sam is a rather rotund pigeon, your normal New York variety, varying colors

of soot and tar. Today he ate, drank and then decided to come and visit with me.

With caution he sat at my feet occasionally looking up at me . As I started to tell

him his namesake ... he walked away, then went back to his feeding.

Place: studio floor
Date: 07.28.08 - Time: 7:00:00 pm
Event: thinking about my power as I
stand alone.

I set forth on discovery a year ago. taking away the one

thing most people love so muchm color. Then set myself apart by

taking less favorable visual paths, though keeping true to what

is now my vision. A year ago I performed inside-out. I am

still inside-out finding the inside of all that we see and bringing

forward. Commitment interesting word, standing tall, having

a vision and finding a new path everday. Always seeing new.

Always breathing and standing tall with conviction ... thats it.

Date: 04.6.08 - Time: 12:35 pm

Event: Waiting for somebody

A neighbor bumped into me

this afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum

of Art. He said to me, "it looks like you are

waiting for somebody" my answer was

'for myself" and he parted.

"the other side"

Date: 03.9.08 - Time: 9:35 pm

Event: Working against a lost hour.

The subconscious never ceases to amaze me.

Some 15yrs ago I worked with a young

programmer

who was forced to recreate my designs by rewriting

them in JAVA Code. I watched him break down each

graphic

to numeric positions on the desktop. Then the two

of us picked color values for those numbers and

he mapped them to my design.

I was always fascinated by his capability to abstract

my forms into numbers. This idea, hidden somewhere in

my subconscious, has been a major

influence in my latest work

cross narrative "this has some way to go"

Date: 03.8.08 - Time: 2:34 pm

Event: Meeting Pollack again

Once a week I sit in the Pollack room

in the MOMA. Usually I will feverishly

sketch out my impressions the

other viewers in the room.

Today I sat mesmerized by one work,

from this

i interpreted the boldness and stretch of his strokes,

his drippings, his total control of the surface.

After an hour or so my book was complete,

though the marks didn't resample Pollack's,

his spirit was contained in my drawing.

What a great force and spirit he is.

a
couple of those moments

Date: 03.3.08 - Time: 7:35 am

Event: Waiting for a Visitor

Everybody has a story, a goal. Today's studio visit is one of

those stories that can never be completely told. When I was

very young man my parents brought me to the gallery that is

visiting my studio today.

That day will always be between my parents and I...

Date: 02.16..08 - Time: 6:35 pm

Event: napping and waking up

First thought I had today after my nap...

Finding my place in the sun...

The answer will be found in tonight's dreams.

Date: 02.17..08 - Time: 3:15 pm

Event: Thinking about last nights dreams.

The answer is that I do have a place in the sun...

Date: 02.12..08 - Time: 10:40 am

Event: Shower Thoughts

Recently I received a message from a friend
who said they were thinking about me in the shower
she apologized on her message and didn't want
me to take it the wrong way. But she did call me.

This morning I was thinking in the shower. The shower
is the most freeing place to think un-encumbered .

Yesterday I worked on a panel for 12hrs straight...
still not resolved, watching the water hitting
the side of the tub this morning... gave me an idea...

Date: 02.9..08 - Time: 10:30 am

Event: Thinking about whose on first.

A thought that it has been haunting
me for the past few days;

There are two people that
make art...

The viewer and the maker.

... who comes first?

Date: 02.04..08 - Time: 10:30 pm

Event: Thinking about those lazy minds

So many people say its all about the words,

or is it pictures and words together, or is it the

lazy mind that needs words to explain a Picture?

"Maybe it's lazy artists relying on words
to explain the visuals rather than fully
realizing them".

(Linda DiGusta's response to my thought above).

Date: 01.01..08 - Time: 2:05 pm

Event: First Entry for 2008

There is no looking back only moving forward.

Today as I walked to the studio the light was

enlightening, the smell of the air clean after

the rain and the rather warm temperature was

soothing. A very nice way to start the year.

So now sitting in my beach chair looking

at the work ahead of me I take a big breath

and say thank youl for all of this, those that

engage me in my life as artist.

Date: 12.06..07 - Time: 10:45 pm

Event: Feeling good

What else should one say

to that...

Date: 12.06..07 - Time: 9:45 pm

Event: feeling cold

Place: 79th street

Sometimes my eyes see warmth, tonight

the cold is chilling to the bones. I wonder

how important feeling the cold is to me,

seeing the the cold is to me or even

feeling the cold. Like one stroke over

the other I wonder about the warmth

and the cold .

Date: 12.02..07 - Time: 02:45 pm

Event: filling in splashes

Place: 79th street

As I always do, to motivate myself

is find a reason why.

Date: 12.01..07 - Time: 10:45 pm

Event: Seeing through it all...

Place: A friendly crowd, in a friendly home

Just walking and absorbing , putting the reason

why aside . Stepping aside from my side, feeling

my feet firmly on the cold ground, excepting,

taking a deep breath and moving forward...

Seeing through it all...

Place: Walking

Date: 11.21..07 - Time: 12:45 pm

Event: Looking for Color ...

Where...

A MOMENT

Place: Studio Chair

Date: 11.12..07 - Time: 10:45 am

Responding seems to be really what I have

Cut my life out to be. They call it mark

making, painting, creating, it is responding,

To life.

Responding....

Date: 01.26.07 Time: 6:49 pm

Event: Looking inside and out

There are days that we take the time to look inside and out . To explore

those alpha moments. The past few moments(paintings) have been a

clearing of my thoughts. Though I am still asking what it means

to look inside and out.
